class starts back up on monday. i haven’t really been able to get out there and do much because of the fire at my mom’s house. it takes a lot of time to catalog and pack up an entire house of charred remains.

so i’m taking a day off work and using good friday to get outta town.

hopefully castle rock state park is as fun as it sounds on the website. campground only accessable by canoe? i’m in!

in preparation, i’ve been watching fishing videos online.

i think the “mysterious fish” they describe making that weird noise is a pike. they’re common in canada and are known to eat ducks right off the surface of the water.

pretty impressive.

know what today is?

it’s the day after the winter solstice.

know what’s so special about that?

it means yesterday was the shortest day of the year. not in the sense that there was less than 24 hours in the day. there was just less daylight. so since yesterday had the smallest amount of sunlight in it, that means today has more sunlight than yesterday. and tomorrow will have more sunlight than today. can i get an AMEN?!?!?

we are officially past midwinter.

might as well get out there and enjoy the snow while we still have some. the sun might still be setting at 4:30, but before you know it, we’ll be complaining about mosquitoes and cutting the grass.

here’s a list of things you can do this winter, just off the top of my head:

ice climbing
snowshoeing
cross-country skiing
downhill skiing
snowboarding
telemark skiing
sledding
build a snowman
build a snow shelter
harvest snow (get creative. use it to do your dishes, wash your hair, water your indoor plants, feed it to your dog, mix it with vinegar to clean)
snowmobiling
making snow angels

and don’t forget the winter olympics (which actually start two weeks before winter officially ends in the US). the olympic bug has bitten me already. i can’t wait for bobsledding and ski jumps!

a lot of people don’t like winter. they hate it, even.

but i’m not one of them. i love it, in fact. i remember taking the long way to the bus stop so i could play in more snow.

but i find myself at a loss for words when people are talking about going florida and sitting on a sun-drenched beach for christmas and they ask me why i would ever want snow over sand.

i don’t have the words, but i do have this video.
